NYC Sustainable Lighting Tour
Cost: Free
Pack a picnic, download a special tour map and visit the NYC DOT's LED pilot project that is soon to be scaled up in Central Park. Visitors may also view the LED installation on FDR drive. The LED installations are part of The Climate Group’s global LightSavers program, an initiative designed to test and measure LED-technology in real-world, urban settings. There are two measurements of the Central Park LEDS proved that the new white light LEDs generated energy savings of 80% as compared to the current metal halide lighting.
This partnership helped meet the goals outlined in Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg’s PlaNYC sustainability agenda, which calls for a 30% reduction in Citywide greenhouse gas emissions by 2030 and a 30% reduction in municipal government’s emissions by 2017, and the energy-reducing initiatives called for in DOT’s strategic plan. It also aligns with DOT’s goal to create and maintain world-class streets by exploring enhanced lighting to improve street safety and mobility for pedestrians and motorists while increase evening economic and community activity.“Energy-efficient lighting is a common-sense approach to tackling global climate change, and New York continues to lead the way as an internationally recognized leader in sustainability,” said Commissioner Sadik-Khan. “With some 300,000 streetlights across the five boroughs, lighting is a vital piece of our City’s infrastructure, and by pioneering energy-saving technology we can enhance our world-class streetscapes at the same time that we engineer a greener, greater New York.”The City was the first to launch a pilot project under the global LightSavers program, which was established by the City of Toronto in 2008 and is now led by The Climate Group. Subsequent LED projects have been installed across other major cities in the U.S., China, Europe, Canada and Australia. The program also builds on DOT’s drive to explore and apply technology that produces greater energy-efficiency savings. A new report, Green Light: Sustainable Street Lighting for NYC, summarizes the agency’s past, current and future efforts to create a greener, greater New York City. For the self-guide guided tour, download the Central Park LED map and the FDR Drive LED mapFor more information, visit http://www.nyc.gov/html/dot

10 Days of Climate Action is an initiative of the Human Impacts Institute (www.HumanImpactsInstitute.org) to bring together artists, musicians and performers to install climate-inspired public works throughout New York City. In an effort to inspire New Yorkers to think more critically about our actions and their impacts, each day of 10 Days of Climate Action will present a climate theme and a creatively engage the public in positive action around issues of climate change.
Representatives from the Human Impacts Institute will be at hand to discuss each piece and to provide passers-by with tools for taking local action on curbing climate change.Three families flee in slow-motion from an impending storm. Faces locked in expressions of fear, limbs twisting as they struggle away from what's coming, the families move horribly slowly, as if through mud. But despite their red wagon and carefully packed suitcases, these are not human families: they are families of fish. Dressed as dapper 40's families but with fish heads, the performers in "Evacuation" call to mind the horrible mass movements caused by World War II but pertain directly to the types of evacuations we are forcing upon our marine life today. The reminder: Evacuating isn't something only humans do.For more information, visit http://www.humanimpactsinstitute.org, http://twitter.com/HumanImpacts
